And I also remind you to remember the habit of bringing your own mug for coffee or tea\, which will taste better than in the styrofoam cups and create less trash! A reminder that the cups and mugs\, etc. that are in the kitchen belong to the Church and are off limits to us! \nThe AGM will be held first and shouldn’t take long. The Agenda and Financial report will be emailed prior to the meeting\, please read both. And if you have any queries about the financial report there will be an opportunity bring it up at the meeting. DESCRIPTION:Out first meeting of the year will be next Sunday\, 9 February\, starting at 2:00 PM. Held at the St. Francis Church Hall\, 92 Mansell Ave.\, Hillcrest. And I also suggest you make a habit of bringing your own mug for coffee or tea\, which will taste better than in the styrofoam cups and create less trash! A reminder that the cups and mugs\, etc. that are in the kitchen belong to the Church and are off limits to us!\nThis meeting is on the subject of PRUNING TO IMPROVE YOUR BONSAI. First of all Aaron will talk about pines and review the seedling pines from 2018. So if anyone is growing seedling pines please bring them to the meeting.\nLes and Sandra will talk about Pruning. Sandra will talk about  HEAVY pruning\,  LIGHT pruning\, and  LEAF pruning for deciduous and leafy trees of different species. Les will talk about Conifers and Evergreens including  pines’ and junipers’ needle pruning.\nAfter the talks there will be a workshop on Pruning. \nSo\, bring along any trees  you want to prune or to get advice on about pruning. At the meeting we can decide whether it is the correct time of the year to prune the tree(s)  you want to prune. If it is\,  you can proceed with its  pruning. If not then advice will be given on when to do it and how to do it. Everyone please bring tools for pruning\, turntables  pruning paste if you have them\, notebook & pen\,and camera or smart phone with a camera\, (for before and after pruning records). There will be a lot of information for a variety of trees that is pertinent to the Waikato. I will bring a few spare turntables for those who don’t have one. \nShow and Tell. Any trees appropriate to the Meeting subject. We became a bit lax on the information you should be able to give about your trees last year- write down the following where known: What species and variety\, what style it is or you plan for it\, where and when you acquired it (how long you have owned it)\, if in training\, did you start the process and when\, or if previous owner started it in training and when. \nI will be bringing the Library\, and if I have room I will bring the entire library. You may want to arrive a bit early and/or stay a little later if you want to have a thorough look through all the books and magazines. There will be some more new books hopefully arriving  later this month. BE SURE AND BRING BACK ANY OUTSTANDING BOOKS OR MAGAZINES YOU HAVE AT HOME!!!!

You should have received your Newsletter\, thanks to Peter M. \nOur February meeting is next Sunday the 10th. Held at the St. Francis Church Hall\, 92 Mansell Ave.\, Hillcrest . If for any reason the upper carpark is full\, don’t forget there is another carpark in front of the Church\, just off the Morrinsville road close to the traffic circle.\nStarts at 2:00 with a short business meeting\, then the fun begins with the topic workshop – making your young Bonsai tree look like an old one.\n\nBelow is a reminder of what to bring\, from Les.  \nThe main feature of this meeting will be a workshop recreating an aged look from young material. \nAs this will be a workshop we need every body to bring along a tree or trees plus your tools plus wire if you have it. The focus will be on creating an aged look from young material. Look for something that is suitable. Pencil thin trees will not do. I will give a brief introduction. However I would like you to think about how we achieve this aged look before the meeting and I might even ask a few questions to see if you have thought about it. Wiring is one way in which an aged look can be achieved. Sandra will take the lead on the wiring part. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Air-layering\nOur November meeting is next Sunday the 11th starting at 2:00PM. Held at the St. Francis Church Hall\, 92 Mansell Ave.\, Hillcrest . If for any reason the upper carpark is full\, don’t forget there is another carpark in front of the Church\, just off the Morrinsville road. \nAnd don’t forget to bring your own mug\, for better tasting coffee or tea and to reduce the waste we have to remove. \nI will only be bringing a minimum of the Library (I have to leave for the South Island about 4:30AM Monday). On our website is a library listing. Have a look and if you see something you would like to have a read of\, let me know and I will ferret it out and bring it (them) to the meeting. I will be bringing back some terrific books from the South Island for the library\, available in December. \nLindsay Muirhead will be talking and demonstrating air-layering. He has had great success with a variety of trees over the years. If you have a tree you think would make a good candidate to air-layer\, bring it along for some advice. \nAnd bring along a success story from a previous air-layer if you have one for Show and Tell. \nThe garment order placed after the Show\, is being processed but no more orders will be taken this year. Next year there will be an order taken. \nWith the winds we have had and that are in the forecast\, remember they are very drying\, so be attentive to your trees water needs even if there have been some showers.. And when aphids take over\, think twice before using Mavrik. I usually use Confidor but couldn’t find it so used Mavrik\, and burned most of the fresh new leaves. New leaves will be grown\, but it is a stress the tree doesn’t need! Certainly killed the aphids though!

The Library will be available. \nAs this will be the first meeting at the new venue\, Melody will go over the “House Rules” and explain the layout in the business meeting. \nAnd as we have to take our trash away with us\, and in the interest of doing our bit to reduce landfill quantity\, we ask that you get in the habit of bringing your own cup or mug for tea/coffee. If you do not have any some small pieces will be available for a $1 or 2.\nOld clothes or apron\nSafety glasses advisable (flying dust & chips)\nOld bread board\, chopping board or similar.\nHand Carving Items\n\nOld woodworking chisels\, screwdrivers (various sizes)\nSharpened Stick (Not too long)\nWire Brush\nSmall hammer\nBasically whatever you’ve got that can gouge out your pumice or create texture. \nNB Suggest you bring something to stop the pumice getting away on you whilst working on it. Suggest a low edging attached to your board (Screws easy to get out)\, shallow plastic tub or any other method you can think of.

DESCRIPTION:Please NOTE our first  monthly meeting for the year will be Thursday 8 February starting at 7pm.\nThis will be held at the normal venue at Wintec\, Hamilton Gardens. \nFor those of you who  are  new to the club say the last 2 years I would like you to bring with you a Bonsai to show to the club. For those of you who attended beginner Bonsai Classes could you bring the tree you did at the classes. You can bring a second tree if you wish. Those of you who are new to the club but did not attend the beginner Bonsai Classes please bring a bonsai that you would like to show to the club or alternatively bring a bonsai for which  you would like advice.\nFor those of you that have been in the club for more than two years would you please bring along a tree or trees that you have developed with Tony Bebb\, Nobu\, Kathy Steyn or any of the other overseas demonstrators that have visited our club. Bring more than one tree if applicable. If you have any photographs of before and after development that would be fantastic.\nIf at all possible I would like all members attending this meeting to bring at least one Bonsai to show and talk about. \nThe purpose of the meeting is to look at Bonsai that have been developed in the past at previous workshops the club has held which will lead us into thinking about trees that would be suitable for the up and coming workshops this year. We have four international Bonsai Artists visiting this year and it is important we start thinking about raw material to bring for these workshops. \nIt would also be desirable if some members could bring trees that would be okay as raw material for any of the workshops this year. If too large to bring may be you have a photograph you could show. We  will have a discussion on what would be suitable for raw material at one of these workshops. \nAs a footnote as the first meeting will be devoted to show and tell we will have no separate session at the start of the meeting on show and tell.
