Sandra gave a brief talk on Winter Pruning

This time of year it’s time to do predominantly structural pruning although some pruning can be done for refinement too.

This is the time of year for BIG cuts in tree – but this is only necessary if you’re changing the style of the bonsai, and if you did the summer bonsai pruning required correctly. When pruning remember to do a clean cut and use cut-paste on the cambium/phloem layer.

Melody gave a couple of book reviews

Both books are available in the Hamilton Bonsai Club library.

Bonsai Growing in New Zealand by Bev and Allan Van
Bonsai Growing in New Zealand by Bev and Allan Van

“Practical and down-to-earth, this is a very good little book, hands-on and useful. It’s NZ based (a big Plus) and very well written with good photos”.

Penjing The Chinese Art of Bonsai by Zhao Brook

Another great book – lots of info and photos.
